Ashamedly enough, I had heard little about Eliasson before his Australian exhibition, as it wasn't until I had to submit a critique of the upcoming show that I hurried off to review his exhibition before the due deadline. Now I had heard a lot of talk about the exhibition prior to my initial visit, but it wasn't until I actually witnessed Eliasson's work for the first time with my own two eyes that I really understood just how much the hype prevailed to be completely justifiable. Take your Time is not just an 'exhibition' as such an experience as Eliasson experiments through the convergence of nature and science, and explores the boundaries between the organic and the artificial, challenging the traditional passive role of the museum and emphasizing the power and potential of the individual engagement.
The moment that the elevator doors parted, I was immediately drawn into this sensory, yet geometric world full of dystopic colours, ambient lights and reflective images. Installations such as Sunset Kaleidoscope (2005) and One-way Colour Tunnel (2007) work with the notion of colour, space and inimitability as the kaleidoscopic-like abyss' form a warped portal of reality and create a totally unique experience that is relative to each individual. The viewer becomes trapped within everlasting reflections and repetitious distortions, where it becomes like “seeing yourself, seeing yourself looking at a picture” as the installations use mirrors and movement in order to establish a sense of presence among the viewer creating almost hypnotic, neon portals of ones own reflection.
One of the most unique and distinguished exhibitions that I've seen to this year- the work of Olafur Eliasson's is truely beautiful in all it's entirety... I liked it so much I even bought the catalogue! Enjoy :)
